Newly installed power meters in Shimla are faulty, producing inflated bills

Shimla: Raising demand to test the newly installed power meters in the city, recently held Municipal Corporation meeting saw ward councillors up in arms, posing questions against their working quality.

Echoing same concern as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi, the elected representatives from almost all wards of the city were discontented over the super fast speed of the meters. They also laid claim that the meters produce inflated bills and are being installed without taking any prior approval from the customer.

Demanding immediate scrapping of meters, the councillors said that people in the city are surprised to find a significant escalation in their electricity bills since these meters have been installed, even though, the consumption of power units has remained very much same or even less.

A demand of ‘meter-testing’ was also raised in the house. Executive Engineer from electricity board Visheshar Sharma informed the house that in wake of a huge number of complaints regarding overstated power bills being received from the city dwellers on a day to basis, testing of meters has already been ordered and the faulty meters would be replaced at the earliest.
