What does Himachal Need Badly, Annadale Cricket Stadium or the Roads?

By building, a stadium Himachal can boost tourism for sure, but the condition of basic infrastructure such as rods is far more important for the same. Then why a stadium was given preference and not roads?

Annadale Ground, located in a deep wide valley in the suburban village of Kaithu, Shimla, is spread in a area of 121-bigha, which looks fabulous even from the Ridge Shimla. It has been under army possession after World War II. Army conducts their practice sessions and other regular military exercises and has maintained its beauty for decades. Moreover, it’s a high seismic zone and the only suitable spot in Shimla City, which can be used for relief operations in case of a natural disaster.However, suddenly we hear that government wants to build a Cricket Stadium and asking Army to hand over the ground to the state government as it belongs to them. The ground is given on lease to Army and the contract is renewed after every 10 years. However, there has been no such renewal from the last 30 years. It will be a great boost for tourism in Shimla says Mr. Anurag Singh Thakur, youngest President of Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association and the elder son of respected Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal.

However, I wonder building a Stadium instead of working on improving the pathetic condition of roads in Himachal Pradesh is the preference. Aren’t these roads important for the development of tourism in Himachal Pradesh. Theog-Kotkhai-Hatkoti-Rohru road in Shimla district decides the fate of apple growers in the upper hills as it’s the only route for the transportation of apples, which is a major part of State economy. Back in 2010, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal had promised that World Bank funded project aimed at improving the conditions of the roads in Himachal Pradesh would be completed by 2013. We all are witnesses of how much of that has been done actually.

Even if we don’t talk about massive projects promised by state government, still the question that why the roads even in Shimla City are crying for maintenance for years remains. Please have a look at the pictures taken at Bypass Road Shimla. Two bridges, which collapsed a few years ago due to natural calamities and to start the transportation again, temporary structures, were build immediately. However, these temporary emergency structures couldn’t see the construction of proper bridges. Every day, most of the heavy vehicles like trucks passes through the bridges and plays very important role in keeping the traffic and transportation smooth.

Now, what the government expects us to conclude? A Stadium and the fight for the ownership in Center are more important than working on what is basic need and necessity for the development of Himachal.

    Nice article yeh dhumal & sons sirf apne liya soch rahay hai phir chaay annadale ground ho,DLF project kanlog,destination hotel and another property at near BSNL or pata nai kya kya agr ab bhi himachal k log nai uthay to socho aglay 5 saal mai yeh dono baap beta kya kya ker dengay.

    Definitely we require roads. More than 400 DPRs are lying with forest department for clearance. Within Shimla city, various road links which can ease the traffic problem, even where money is to be provided by center under JNNRUM scheme are  still pending. As the construction activity in every part and parcel of Shimla is in full swing, a day will come when there will not be any possibility of making link roads or widening the existing one. The authorities must wake up and understand the need of the hour. By all means the Central Shimla should be de-congested and it will be possible only by diverting the traffic to bye-passes  through construction of link roads.
