HRTC Building Collapses in Shimla’s Theog, 2 killed, 7 injured, some feared trapped
Shimla– An office building in Theog of Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, suddenly collapsed on Friday afternoon. Two people were killed, about 7 people sustained injuries, and some were feared to be trapped under the debris, said initial reports. Critically injured were rushed to the Indira Gandhi Hospital, Shimla.
The two-storeyed building housed the office of the Himachal Pradesh Transport Corporation.
As per the district administration, the rescue work was in progress with the help of police, fire department, homegaurds and locals. A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was also called to assist the rescue work, said the district administration.
The government has announced immediate relief of Rs. 25 thousand to the affected. Transport Minister Shri G.S Bali announced financial assistance of rupees five lakh each to the family members of the deceased. He said one family member of the family would be given employment as Transport Multipurpose Assistant in the department.
He said the Transport department would bear all the medical expenses of the all five injured of the incident.
As per eyewitnesses, the building collapsed like a deck of cards while several people were inside including the staff. Several people were present on the booking counter, said the survivors.
While the cause OF the collapse is not known yet, it was reported by sources that the building was very old and poorly maintained. The sources suggested the building was declared unsafe a few years ago, but the authorities did not pay attention and continued to run booking counter in it.
For now, the reason is believed to be continuous heavy rains, but a magisterial probe has also been ordered into the case, informed the administration.
