Taxi operators’ strike halts tourism in Himachal
The three-day strike by commercial vehicles, including taxi operators, who are demanding roll back in hike in taxes, have grinded tourism in Himachal to a halt with occupancy in hotels sliding fast across the state. Cancellations and postponing of tour plans to Himachal is continuing and is expected to continue for few more days.
Tourist crowds have disappeared from Shimla, Manali, Dalhousie and other tourist places of the state. Hotel occupancy in Manali has slid to 15% while it is nearly 30% in Shimla. Many hotels in Himachal have all rooms vacant and have very few bookings for remaining days of the month. Early checking-out of the tourists is also being reported from many hotels. Though the strike came to an end on Wednesday evening, hoteliers still believe that the impact of the complete strike will be seen in next few weeks. (Suresh Sharma,TNN)
