YWCA Shimla celebrates One Billion Rising – Revolution 2015
YWCA OF SIMLA IN ASSOCIATION WITH JAGORI RURAL, SANGAT AND JAN ABHIYAN SANSTHA JOINS THIRD YEAR OF GLOBAL MASS ANTI-VIOLENCE CAMPAIGN
SHIMLA- On 14th February 2015, the YWCA of Simla (Young Women’s Christian Association) in association with Jagori Rural, SANGAT and Jan Abhiyan Sanstha joined with activists around the world for ONE BILLION RISING: REVOLUTION. 14th February is being celebrated as ‘One Billion Rising’ to awaken people worldwide to end violence against women. It is a global campaign which began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.
This year, One Billion Rising launched its third campaign with One Billion Rising: Using the tagline, “Drum, Dance & Rise,” women, men and youth will plan, lead, and participate in actions, dances and artistic events, and rallies —or Risings—in hundreds of countries.
On this occasion a flash mob (group theme dance) was performed twice by the students of YWCA of Simla at the Padam Dev Complex, the Ridge, Shimla. This was followed by talks, presentations and discussion on themes – violence against women and children, gender justice and masculinity at the YWCA of Simla. Residents of Shakrori Village, Sunni and Chaili Panchayat were also part of this event.
Speakers for the event included: Prof. Meenakshi Faith Paul (Coordinator, One Billion Rising 2015), Dr. Richa Minocha (Member Secretary, Jan Abhiyan Sanstha), Mrs. Phalma Chauhan (District Secretary, AIDWA, Ms. Sumitra Chandel (Former Vice President, Gyan Vigyan Samiti, Mr. Surender Kumar (Trustee, Umang Foundation)
