St. Bede’s college organizes Cyber Crime Awareness Program
SHIMLA – A Cyber Crime Awareness Program was organized by Parent Teacher Association, St. Bede’s College in association with a NGO, Nayi Aashyein on April 25, 2015.
As the resource person, the event was attended by Mr. Abhishek Dullar, Superintendent of Police, State Vigilance & Anti-corruption Bureau, Himachal Pradesh. Mr. Dullar, in a power point presentation, talked about cyber crime describing how a computer is used as a target or a tool or both for committing a crime. He further talked at length about various types of cyber crimes like hacking, data theft, identity theft, card frauds, cyber laundering etc.
Since many people are engaged in online shopping, online payment of bills, using ATM, the chances of card skimming, password theft has become common. He advised the parents to be vigilant about children using the Internet.
The first and basic step of ensuring security is to use strong passwords which should be changed frequently. The password must contain at least one alpha-numeric character and digits.
Social networking scams, which may include fake profiles, lottery, inheritance, charity scams, and attractive free packages as temptation, can lure youngsters. In order to avoid falling victim to such cyber crimes, we need to protect unwanted access to our computer or computing devices like smartphones and tablets. Also, users must be aware of necessary and effective security measures to safeguard stored data.
There are more than 300 million users and their number is increasing tremendously. He threw some light on the unique features of Cyber Crime and emphasized that prevention through awareness is the best cure.
