Shongthong-Karcham Protest: Angry activists, workers protesting at Secretariat arrested
SHIMLA- Supporting the agitation of workers of the Shongthong-Karcham project in Kinnaur, activists of CITU yesterday courted arrest at the Secretariat under the leadership of CPM state vice-president Rakesh Singha.
Singha said even after 42 days of strike, the government was not serious about the miserable plight of workers in the project who had not been paid wages from the past three months.
In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Shimla Municipal Corporation Sanjay Chauhan and Tikender Singh Panwar alleged that the Kinnaur district administration was in collusion with the company and its sub-contractors and instead of steering a road map for discussion and resolving the crisis, they had aggravated the issue.
Demanding immediate intervention, they said the majority of the affected workers were Himachalis and from the tribal Kinnaur district and reiterated that the main beneficiary contractor is Mahender Negi, brother of the Deputy Speaker of the Vidhan Sabha Jagat Negi, who is also the local MLA.
The leaders stated that they had also decided to join the protests in Shimla to expose the sinister gang up that had taken place in the tribal land of Kinnaur.
