Himachal enhances incentive for catching monkey to Rs. 700
SHIMLA-Controlling monkey population has become a gigantic task for the Himachal Pradesh Government. The population has increased upto a level where the monkeys are coming in direct conflict with human population and human interests. After failure of sterilization programs, the State government managed to agree Centre to declare monkeys vermin in about 53 Tehsil in 10 districts of the state.
Himachal Pradesh enhanced the amount for killing of monkeys outside the forest area from Rs. 300 to Rs. 500 per monkey. Now, the amount for sterilization of the monkey has also been increased from Rs. 500 to Rs. 700. The government also approved to provide a sum of Rs. 1000 per monkey where 80 percent of the herd was caught in a particular area.
Grant of Rs. 1000 would be provided to the Village Forest Development/ Joint Forest Management Committees set up at panchayat level in those tehsils where monkeys had been declared as vermin. The grant will be used in organization of workshops regarding the issue of increasing monkey population and measures to control it.
The information was provided by Forest Minister Thakur Singh Bharmouri, who said that after declaration of monkeys as vermin in few Tehsils of the State, the Government has approved special incentives to the people for catching or killing the monkeys.
