hp assembly election 2017 electoral rolls revision

SHIMLA-The battle for political power in Himachal Pradesh has officially begun as the HP Election Department yesterday announced special summary revision of photo electoral rolls-2017 from July 1 to July 28, 2017 in all 68 Assembly constituencies of the State ahead of upcoming General Assembly Elections- 2017. Final electoral rolls will be published by September 15, informed a Spokesman of the Election Department. Considering the schedule for the revision, the elections can be expected to be held anytime after Diwali.

The political arena is expected to heat up following the announcement. As per political critics, the ruling Congress Government is on back-foot owing to several reasons. The party has faced defeat in the polls for Municipal Corporation of Shimla held in June due to same reasons. BJP has claimed the seat of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the first time in the history of SMC elections. The internal faction in Congress and friction between them is clearly visible. On the other hand, Bhartiya Janata Party is making full of Modi wave. In SMC poll campaigns, BJP candidates, alongside their own photo, had also printed photograph of the PM Modi on their banners.

BJP’is consistently coming out with campaigns like ongoing Parivartan Rath Yatra. Moreover, BJP is using big names and popular faces like Amit Shah and JP Nadda to woo the voters while Congress is banking on only on the reputation of Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

Schedule for Revision of Electoral Rolls
As per the Spokesperson, the draft publication of photo electoral rolls at all polling stations and offices of the Returning Registration Officer (ADM/SDM) and Assistant Returning Officers (Tehslidar/Naib Tehsildar) would be conducted on July 1.

The claims and objections would be invited from July 1 to July 28, which would be decided by August 11. The final electoral rolls would be published on September 15, he informed.

Special meetings of Gram Sabhas would be convened on July 9 and July 23. Names of electors would be read out and claims and objections would be invited during these Sabhas. Similarly, special meetings will also be held at ward/muhalla level in urban areas, the Spokesperson informed further.

Special campaign would also be launched on July 8 and July 16, 2017 at every polling station. During this campaign any eligible voter can verify name of his and family members besides registering their names.

Citizens can call on toll free number 1950 to receive information regarding enrollment of his/her name in the present electoral rolls.
