Shimla MC Councilor Sanjay parmar

SHIMLA- Councilor Sanjay Parmar, who won recent Shimla Municipal Corporation Polls as independent candidate from Ghora Chowki ward, was yesterday assaulted by unknown people near Shoghi in Shimla. An eight second long video clip showing the councilor being beaten has gone viral on social media.

The councilor had been an associate of Congress prior to SMC elections. However, after victory in poll, Parmar joined Bhartiya Janata Party. SMC, that was considered fort of Congress, was breached by BJP for the first time in three decades.

Parmar approached the Boileauganj Police Station after the incident and registered an FIR. He alleged that some Congress supported men stopped his car near Shoghi while he was on his way back from Chandigarh. Four of them dragged him out of the car, threw ink on his face, abused him and started thrashed him. All six accused fled the scene after the assault.

Parmar reportedly received injuries on his face.

Enraged over this incident, some BJP party workers and leaders rushed to the police station and even staged a protest.

Total six people were involved in the assault. Four accused has been identified while remaining two are still be identified,

Senior Superintend Police, Shimla, Bhajan Singh Negi, told Himachal Watcher.

FIR has been registered under IPC Section 147, 149,506, 504, and 323 and police is investigating the matter

, he further informed.

Previously, Parmar had been a Congress nominated councilor. This year, he fought as an Independent candidate and won the elections. Against expectations of the Congress, however, he joined BJP after victory.

BJP had emerged as the largest party by securing 17 seats in the polls while Congress had claimed 12 seat and support of an Independent candidate. BJP required one more candidate to attain magic figure of 18. BJP had taken all its victorious candidates to unknown place and had locked them up fearing poaching by Congress.

Independent winning candidate, Rakesh Kumar was a BJP rebel and, as expected, supported the party. The two Independent candidates Sharda Chauhan and Sanjay Parmar being Congress supporters were expected to support the Congress. However, Parmar spoiled the equation for the Congress and took number to 19 for BJP.

BJP managed to break into Congress family and convince some independent councilors to join hands. Congress workers were bewildered when Sanjay Parmar joined BJP right after meeting the Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh after poll results.

In the election of Mayor, Congress had again faced betrayal by at least one of his councilors who voted for the BJP candidate.

The SMC elections were crucial considering upcoming polls for HP Assembly. In previous polls, Congress had won 11 seats. This time, the number increased to 12. Though, despite anti-incumbency, the Congress did reasonably well as compared to previous elections, still it lost the fight for the power in MC House for the first time.
