Nauni varsity scientist conferred ‘Bharat Shiksha Ratan’ award

Solan: Dr. Divender Gupta, an entomologist working at the Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (UHF), Nauni, Solan district, has bagged the prestigious Bharat Shiksha Ratan Award.

The award was given in recognition for his services in the field of agriculture education, research, and extension.

The Global Society for Health and Educational Growth presented the award to Dr Gupta at a ceremony held at the Vithal Bhai Patel House, New Delhi.

Dr. Gupta is presently working as a Principal Scientist in the UHF’s Department of Entomology. After a brief stint in the All India Agricultural Services, he joined the UHF in 1990 at its regional station in Jachh.

Upon shifting to the main campus, Dr Gupta got involved in academics in addition to research and extension activities.

Dr Gupta’s main work has been on fruit flies, which is a formidable pest of agro-horticultural crops causing losses to fruit and vegetable crops. He has provided solutions to a number of problems pertaining to fruit and vegetable entomology. Dr Gupta has also been a pioneer in studying population dynamics and management of fruit flies in the department.

He has devised management methods against fruit flies like the use of methyl eugenol based attractant traps using wooden blocks.

This has also been included in the Package of Practices of the University and Spray Schedule of HP Horticulture Department.

Dr Gupta has also evaluated a chemical, which helps in breaking of eggs inside the body of the fruit fly. He is undertaking further studies on this method. He presented this work at an International Seminar in Malaysia in 2016 in which participants from 20 countries took part.

Besides several research papers in reputed journals, Dr Gupta has five chapters, manuals and a number of bulletins to his credit.

He attributed his success to hard work, inspiration from teachers, and feedback from the farming community, and good wishes of family members, friends and students. UHF Vice-Chancellor Dr HC Sharma and other faculty congratulated Dr Gupta on bringing laurels to the University.

UHF Nauni’s counselling for M Sc seats to be held on July 17 and 28

Solan: The first session of counselling for the M Sc programmes of the Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni would be held on July 17, 2018.

This year over 900 students had applied for the various M Sc programmes of the university. Due to a large number of candidates, the university in its first session of counselling has called the applicants who have passed their B Sc Horticulture/ Forestry/ Agriculture or Biotechnology degrees from State Agricultural Universities under the ICAR-AU of education.

The remaining applicants will be called for the second counselling, which is to be held at the University’s LS Negi Auditorium on July 28 and the detailed information will be available on the university website on July 24. The procedure for admission has been explained in the university prospectus.

This year the university is offering M Sc in its College of Horticulture and College of Forestry located at the main campus at Nauni, and College of Horticulture and College of Horticulture and Forestry (COH&F), Neri.

The specializations are offered in College of Horticulture are Entomology, Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Food Technology, Fruit Science, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Plant Pathology, Seed Science and Technology, Spices, Plantation and Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and Vegetable Science.

In College of Forestry, candidates have the option of pursuing M Sc in Agricultural Economics, Agroforestry, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Forest Genetic Resources, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Microbiology, Silviculture, Soil Science, Statistics, Watershed Management and Wood Science and Technology. In COH&F Neri, candidates can opt for Agroforestry, Entomology, Food Tech, Fruit Science, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Plant Pathology, Soil Science and Vegetable Science.

HIMCOSTE PLS: Eminent scientist & activist Dr Vandana Shiva to speak at Shimla on July 17

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Council for Science Technology and Environment (HIMCOSTE), Shimla is organising Popular Lecture Series (PLS) under its Science Popularisation programme.

This programme started under Science Popularisation since 2017 for Science students of Govt. Degree Colleges of all the Districts of Himachal Pradesh. The programme is funded by Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, under the Science Day and Mathematics Day celebration.

Eminent speakers/scientists are invited to address students so that they are motivated for taking up Science & Technology and work for the betterment of the community.
This series of lectures will be organised in the first phase at the:

  1. Government Degree College (GDC), Sanjauli, Shimla on July 17
  2. GDC Bilaspur on August 1
  3. GDC Hamirpur on August 2
  4. GDC Nathan on August 8
  5. GDC Solan August 9

Following five renowned and eminent scientists and environmental activist will deliver lectures :

  2. Retd. Prof. PK Ahluwalia, Department of Physics HP University
  3. Dr Patrick Das Gupta, Department of Physics & Astrophysics University of Delhi

  6. Dr Rajeev Kumar Puri, Department of Physics University of Punjab

 

The second phase in other Districts would be organised in September and October 2018.

Dr Vandana Shiva at Sanjauli College on sustainable Mountain Agriculture & Organic Farming

The First lecture in this series would be delivered by Dr Vandana Shiva, founder of Navdanya – a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, especially native seeds and to promote organic farming and fair trade

For the last two decades, Navdanya has worked with local communities and organizations serving more than 5,00,000 men and women farmers. Navdanya’s efforts have resulted in conservation of more than 3000 rice varieties from all over the country and have established 60seed banks in 16 states across the country.

In 2004, she started Bija Vidyapeeth, an international college for sustainable living in Doon Valley in collaboration with Schumacher College, U.K.

Dr Shiva combines the sharp intellectual enquiry with courageous activism. She is equally at ease working with peasants in rural India and teaching in Universities worldwide.

Time Magazine identified Dr Shiva as an environmental “hero” in 2003 and Asia Week has called her one of the five most powerful communicators of Asia. Forbes magazine in November 2010 has identified Dr Vandana Shiva as one of the top seven most Powerful Women on the Globe.

The topic of the talk by Dr Vandana Shiva would be “Sustainable Mountain Agriculture & Organic Farming” at Govt. Degree College, Sanjauli on July 17, 2018, where 1000 science students are expected to get benefitted by this talk. The Science faculty of Sanjauli College would attend this talk.

Counselling for Nauni varsity’s self-financed UG seats held today, to be held for M Sc on July 17

Solan: The first counselling for the self-financed seats of undergraduate programmes offered by the Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni was held at the university campus today. The counselling was held for admission to B Sc (Hons) Horticulture, B Sc (Hons) Forestry, and B Tech Biotechnology programmes at the three constituent colleges of the university.

Over 485 students from all over the country, who had scored 78 per cent and above in the Class 12 examination, were called for the counselling. Several students who had applied for these seats had scored well over 90 per cent in their Class 12, with the highest being 96.5 per cent.

The university has a separate admission process for its self-financed seats and students from all over the country can apply for it. The merit list for these seats is decided based on the marks scored in the Class 12 examination. In total, 1309 students had applied for the self-financed seats.

The Counselling Committee today verified all the documents of the students along with taking their preference of course and college. The seat allotment list will be available on the website on July 13.

In addition to these seats, the university holds an entrance examination for its general seats, for which only students from Himachal Pradesh are eligible to apply.

This year over 5600 students had applied for general seats and the first counselling was held on July 4. The university will be holding the first counselling for its M Sc programmes on July 17, 2018.
