Shimla-based NGO seeks rescue of an homeless, ailing elderly man living in rain-shelter lest he dies of cold
The homeless man was a Sadhu, who was suffering from paralysis in the left arm and gangrene in his right leg. His eyes showed symptoms of possible cataract.
SHIMLA- Last Thursday, a kind-hearted resident of Shimla found an elderly man in rags sitting on a roadside near Wakanaghat in district Solan. He was shivering with cold and needed immediate help. The man was first rescued by Mr. Dinesh Thakur (40), who is a retired solider from Indian Army (Dogra Regiment), and currently runs a tyre retreading business in Shalaghat (Solan).
Mr. Dinesh brought him to Shalaghat rain-shelter, bought a blanket and bedding, and fed him. He found that the homeless man was a Sadhu, who was suffering from paralysis in the left arm and gangrene in his right leg. His eyes showed symptoms of possible cataract. Since last Thursday, Mr. Dinesh is feeding him but as he required medical attention and better shelter, he approached Shimla-based NGO Umang Foundation for help.
On Tuesday, the Chairman of Foundation, Ajai Shrivastva, accompanied by two other volunteers, Surender Kuma and Vipasha, paid a visit to the man and gathered details about him. Mr. Shrivastva brought the matter to the attention of Rakesh Kanwar, Deputy Commissioner, Solan.

He requested the DC to rescue the ailing elderly, homeless man as his life is in danger due to biting cold and illness.
Himachal Watcher’s Community member Tarun Sharma also accompanied Mr. Shrivastva and clicked few photographs and recorded short video clip to provide better clarity on the condition of the man.
The man said that his name is Paramhans Hanuman Dass. He was born on November 17, 1945 in Saptarishi Akhada, village Sirsa, Distt. Allahabad, UP . His father had died when Hanuman Dass was a kid. His foster father Bapu Singh was in Army. Hanuman Dass became Sadhu in his childhood and his Guru was Ram Dass of Saptarishi Akhada, village Sirsa. Now, neither his Guru nor any family member is alive to support him.
Mr. Shrivastva informed the DC that this homeless elderly Sadhu was shifted the rain shelter in Shalaghat by a public spirited person, who also arranged for the blankets and bedding etc. to protect him from biting cold.
Dinesh Thakur requested me to intervene immediately and explore possibility to send him to some safer place,
said Mr. Shrivastva.
Right now, as we saw, he is suffering from various ailments including paralysis in left limbs and gangrene in right foot apart from some other problems. He is not capable to move his left hand and foot due to paralysis,
further said Mr. Shrivastva.
He further said that keeping in view man’s physical problems and biting cold condition, he is urgently required to be shifted to some safe shelter.
Mr. Shrivastva suggested that the Old Age Home at Basantpur, Distt. Shimla, run by HP State Social Welfare Advisory Board, is the right place to send him immediately for rehabilitation. He can be given medical assistance and treatment while keeping him in the Home, said Shrivastva.
Hopefully, if the district administration co-operated, very soon the man would be rescued and provided medical treatment and shelter. Earlier, Umang Foundation has helped a severely disabled girl Anitu to find a shelter and attention of the administration.
