In Pictures: Republic Day 2017 celebrations at Shimla Ridge amid chilling, rainy climatic conditions
SHIMLA– The celebrations of India’s 68th Republic Day at the capital city of hill State Himachal Pradesh were diluted by rainy weather and freezing temperature with fast blowing winds. Still, all parades including those of school children (in NCC and NSS) were performed amid hostile climatic conditions. But the cultural and other performance suffered as they had to run to the gaiety theater, which proved insufficient and too congested for large crowd consisting of VVIPS, their security and common people. People also avoided getting out in such weatherl, so the crowd was largely missing.
In Shimla, Governor Acharya Devvrat unfurled the National Flag and took the salute during a march past at the State-level Republic Day function held on the historic Ridge Maidan, amidst the incessant downpour with the temperature plummeting down to 3 degrees.
The Governor inspected the parade and took salute from an impressive march past.
Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, his wife Pratibha Singh were also present on the occasion.
The March past was presented by the various contingents.
Other contingents were Police, Assam regiment,SSB Jawansl HomeguardsL, Bharat Scouts and Guides
The parades were followed by cultural programme that were presented in the Gaiety Theatre because of heavy rain on the Ridge.
The celebrations were witnessed by Irrigation and Public Health Minister, Vidya Stokes, Excise and Taxation Minister Prakash Chaudhary Deputy Mayor Tikendar Panwar, Chief Secretary Shri V.C. Pharka, Director General of Police Sanjay Kumar, other senior Civil, Police and Military officers.
