Himachal Olympics – First-of-its-kind mega sports event kicks off in Hamirpur
HAMIRPUR– The “Himachal Olympic” Games, that is being claimed to be the biggest sporting extravaganza in Himachal Pradesh’s history, began in Hamirpur yestersay as athletes from 11 districts of Himachal Pradesh took to the arena. The sports event is organized by the Himachal Pradesh Olympic Association (HPOA).
The one-of-its-kind State Olympic Games consist of 11 games, namely Hockey, Athletics, Boxing, Basketball, Judo, Kabaddi, Volleyball, Wrestling, Kho-Kho, Weight Lifting and Shooting, with large number of sportsmen confirming their participation. The games are being held in an inter-district format and are following the format of the International Olympic Games.
Day 1 of the Himachal Pradesh State Olympic Games saw teams competing in the preliminary rounds in (score card attached with this mail in excel sheets) disciplines with the games simultaneously taking place at Boys Secondary School Ground, Degree College, Anu and NIT Hamirpur.
International Wrestler and son of Legendary Wrestler Master Chandgi Ram Ji, Mr. Jagdish Kaliraman graced the mega sports event. Mr. Jagdish Kaliraman also acted in film “Sultan” as the coach of Bollywood Star Salman Khan.
Mr. Kaliraman awarded Medals to the winning athletes. Speaking on the occasion he said that events of such magnitude are going to be wonderful launch pads for budding sportspersons in the state. He also offered his services to the wrestlers of the state, especially Women Wrestlers. Master Chandgi Ram, and now his son Jagdish Kaliraman run India’s first centre for the training of Women Wrestlers.
Similar to an Olympic Torch Run, a torch run for the HP State Olympic games began from Shimla on June 17 and reached Hamirpur yesterday. The games were officially inaugurated yesterday with some of the eminent personalities including the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Acharya Devvrat, Rajesh Bhandari and Puneet Anand joining Anurag Thakur.
