Chamba bus accident -14 killed, 10 injured as bus rolls down a 700-meter gorge


Today, at around 3 PM, a private mini bus (HP 73-1568) rolled down a 700-metre gorge at Saru Nullah in remote Salooni Tehsil of Chamba district on Saturday. Fourteen people were killed and 10 injured in the accident. The dead included three women and two children. Most of the victims were from Himgiri and nearby villages.

The bus was on its way from Chamba to Himgiri village, in which 12 people died on the spot while two succumbed to their injuries on the way to nearby Kihar hospital. The injured were rushed to the government hospital at Salooni.

According to the eyewitnesses the driver lost the control on a sharp curve. However, the actual cause of the accident is still not known. As the area is remote, there was a delay in receiving the information at district headquarters. Soon after it, the rescue teams were rushed to the spot from Salooni and Tissa. Locals had started rescue operation before the authorities could reach the spot.

The Govt. has announced Rs. 10,000 each as an immediate relief to the next of the kin of the deceased and Rs. 5,000 each to the injured.

Like always, the CM, the Transport Minister GS Bali, the Governor etc. have mourned over the loss of lives along with expressing condolences to the families of the victims.
