Kotkhai Case: One accused allegedly murdered in police custody in Shimla
Shimla– As another bewildering development in the rape and murder case of a schoolgirl in Kotkhai, Shimla, and Himachal Pradesh, one of the accused allegedly murdered another accused in police custody. Police confirmed the murder, and said Rajinder (32) allegedly smashed Suraj Singh (29), one of the Nepalese accused, on the ground. The time of the brawl and murder is said to be around midnight. Our total arrested six accused, two were sharing the same lock-up in the Kotkhai police station, said initial reports.
A report on Hindustan Times, however, said the accused died of strangulation.
Police said he died due to head injury and excessive bleeding. Official statements from Superintendent of Police, Shimla, DW Negi, and SIT head, IG Zahur H Zaidi, are awaited.
The murder in custody has reminds the reported suicide of one of accused in Delhi’s Nirbhaya case.
The incident has raised big question over working and attitude of the police. The investigation was already in question, and locals had alleged the SIT of shielding the real culprits. Massive protest are being staged by people demanding CBI inquiry. Police remained tight-lipped and didn’t comment how the staff at the police station remained unaware of the brawl, and how the Rajender received enough time to murder the deceased.
The murdered accused was later taken to Theog hospital, and then transported to Indira Gandhi Medica College & Hospital, Shimla for post-mortem.
With this news, the rumors regarding botched up investigation by Himachal Pradesh Police’s Special Investigation Team formed for investigation into the case have intensified.
More details are awaited after post-mortem of the body.
