Havan for kotkhai gangrape victim

Kotkhai Case: Heartbreaking scene as grieving villagers break into tears during a ‘Havan’

We have put our trust in Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) now, and we hope CBI will unearth the truth and hang the real culprits, they said.

Shimla – People couldn’t hold their tears during a havan (ritual) performed on Sunday in Dandi forest in Kotkhai to bring peace to the soul of deceased victim of the gangrape and brutal murder. Hundreds of villagers, school children, and family had gathered to offer prayers and participate in the Havan in the same forests where the body of 16-year-old, Class X student was found on the morning of July 6.

It was a heartbreaking scene as grieving family of the victim and hundreds of others broke into tears. They were seen trying to console the family and comfort each other.

The parent’s and the sister of the victim clearly said they don’t have trust in police investigation conducted by the Special Investigation Team in the case.

We have put our trust in Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) now, and we hope CBI will unearth the truth and hang the real culprits, they said.

Villagers were seen debating over theory presented by the SIT on the basis of which it had claimed solving the case. The SIT head, IG Zahur H Zaidi, and DGP Somesh Goyal, had held a press conference on last Thursday. They had claimed that the case was solved, all culprits were arrested and they have confessed their crime.

Several missing links and startling turn that the SIT took at the press conference had raised eyebrows of media and people across Himachal. Since then, protest continues to grow as family and villagers alleged State police of shielding real culprits, who belong to affluent families.

Under mounting pressure of massive protests that followed the SIT claim forced the government to transfer the case to CBI. The centre government was yet to order the CBI to probe the case. However, CBI hasn’t confirmed any orders from the Centre yet.

The delay is further infuriating already agitated masses. The protests are spreading to other parts of India like Chandigarh and Mumbai. Rahul Gandhi, President of All India Congress, also asked the State party chief Sukkhu to provide details regarding the entire matter.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and leaders of opposition aren’t missing any opportunity of issuing political statements over the matter. The ex-Chief Minister, Prem Kumar Dhumal, in a press statement, said this case would be hushed-up like alleged case of Dharamsala gangrape, which were found to be rumors after investigation.

Exploitation of heart-wrenching crime by leaders for political gains is further infuriating people. Having lost faith in State government and its leaders, the people have announced organization of more protests. A massive protest march is expected on July 18 at Gumma, Shimla.
