National Green Tribunal bans old vehicles on Manali-Rohtang highway

SHIMLA- Popular tourist destination Manali may witness a cleaner look in the next six months. Acting tough against the Himachal Pradesh government for allowing illegal structures and deforestation in the area, The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday banned vehicles more than 15 years old from plying on the Manali-Rohtang highway. Directing for deployment of technicians to check emissions, pollution certificates and age of vehicles within two weeks, the tribunal ordered clearing up of all stalls along Manali-Rohtang, except Marhi (whose demolition had been stayed by the Supreme Court. The state to allow only CNG buses till Rohtang for tourism and to make it operational in the coming tourist season, it ordered both the central and state pollution control boards to establish ambient air quality monitoring stations in Manali, Vashisht, Marhi, Gulaba and a portable one in Rohtang. ~ India Today
