Congress MLA’s Gundagardi and HP Govt.’s neglect of demands of doctors lead to health crisis in State
Hundreds of operations were delayed and patients had to run to private hospitals for treatment. In several cases, pregnant ladies in labor pain were also rushed to private hospitals.
SHIMLA– Tired of Gundagardi, misbehavior, and threats from elected MLAs and influential political personalities, doctors and medical officers in Himachal were forced to stage protest on Monday seeking security. The health services in Himachal were crippled across the State as over 1,500 doctors working at various hospitals of the State were on mass leave as a protest against government’s inaction against their unethical treatment and regarding neglect of their long-pending demands. The resident doctors also supported the protest.
The patients were harassed as the OPDs remained closed and only doctors on emergency duty attended patients at the zonal, regional, and civil hospitals across the State. Hundreds of operations were delayed and patients had to run to private hospitals for treatment. In several cases, pregnant ladies in labor pain were also rushed to private hospitals.
Himachal Pradesh Medical Officers Association raised various instances where doctors were either humiliated or even given life threats by politicians or anti-social elements for not yielding to their unlawful and unethical will.
The most recent case was that of Bumber Thakur, Congress MLA from district Bilaspur, who allegedly tried to force the doctor to manipulate the legal guidelines for issuance of disability certificate for a specific person. The alleged misbehavior and threat were recorded by the doctor and were released in media a day after it.
Audio Clip: Bumber Thakur Abusive and Threatening an On-Duty Doctor
The legislator can be clearly heard insulting and threatening doctor in abusive language, which is not acceptable at any cost. However, the Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh ignored the audio clip and termed it as a conspiracy to defame the Congress party. He had also said that government officials should not record calls from legislators.
Reportedly, the doctor is on leave fearing the wrath of Congress MLA’s gundagardi and locked himself inside house.
The doctors are working under difficult conditions but the insensitive government did not recognise this fact and doctors community was being humiliated and physically attacked but the chief minister refused even to express sympathy with the victim doctor at Bilaspur,
said a CPI(M) statement.
This is nothing but Mafia rule which is being justified by the highest political authority in the state and there cannot be a more shameful situation than this,
In other instance, on December 22, 2016, a doctor was made to apologize to the body of a patient who was brought dead to a hospital in Una. Following the instance, the doctor suffered a heart-attack.
However, the government including the health minister Kaul Singh Thakur and the Secretary continue to maintain their silence and patronize these goons.
The association demanded that the government must attend to their grievance and accept their demands including security from ‘gunda raj.’
The government must bring in a Bill as per which attack on doctors on duty will be non-bailable on the lines of Punjab and Haryana. There are other 15 demands which the government has not accepted,
members of the association said.
