Bridge collapses on Shimla bypass, apple trucks suffer most
SHIMLA-One of the two bridges on NH 22 bypass near Lalpani collapsed yesterday while the process of dismantling it was underway. A JCB machine working on the bridge also rolled down. However, the operator survived and no injuries were reported. According to the workers present on the scene yesterday, the bridge could not bear the weight of a JCB working on the bridge and collapsed. (Scroll down to view Pictures)
Today, workers were trying to pull back the machine, but heavy rain hampered the operation. People were stuck in traffic jams as the alternate patch of road, which is nothing but flowing mud, was half covered with JCB and cranes. Trucks carrying apple crops from upper hills are likely to suffer most from it. Now, the alternative patch of road is forced to bear all the traffic, which is flooding with rainwater and has turned into a pool of mud. This increases the probability of a landslide on the site.
The bridge was already in a decayed condition and after decades of wait for maintenance, it eventually collapsed. The bridge was build years ago as a temporary structure after the main bridge collapsed. Sadly, it remained permanently temporary and for the last few years, the conditions of the bridge had worsened. Recently, HW had also published an article with pictures of the second bridge on bypass, which was in wrecked condition as well.
